Do you know what is happening in your business, or do you know what you were told?

Do you know what is happening in your business, or do you know what you were told?

There is a difference between information and a report. One is what happened. The other is what happened, after somebody decided how to tell you.

Everything you know about your business today, you were told by somebody.

Production said the order is almost ready. Accounts said the party will pay next week. Sales said the customer is interested. Each statement came from a person who wanted to give you a reasonable answer, and each one is slightly rounder than the fact behind it.

Nobody lied. This is just what happens when information travels through people.

How the picture bends

Almost ready usually means two days away, because nobody wants to be the one holding bad news on a Tuesday.

Will pay next week means he said that, which he also said the previous week, and the person telling you may not remember that either.

Interested means the conversation went politely, which is not the same as likely.

None of this is a character problem. People soften naturally, and more so when the person asking is the one who signs their salary. The more direct you are, the more carefully people answer.

What changes when you can see for yourself

Not trust. The point is not to catch anybody.

What changes is the conversation. When you can already see that the order is at the third stage and has been for four days, you do not ask is it ready. You ask what is holding it at stage three, and you get a real answer, because the person knows you already know.

That is a better conversation for both sides. Your team stops having to manage your impression, and you stop making decisions on a picture that is kinder than the truth.

Facts should arrive by themselves. People should be asked about judgement, which is the thing they are actually good at.

Everything you believe about your business right now came from somebody. How much of it could you check yourself in two minutes?

Making the facts arrive on their own, so your people are asked about judgement instead of status, is the shift we build towards. Ask us what that would look like in your business.
